Whale watching

Whale watching in Alta

These mighty creatures inhabit the Norwegian coast, captivating both tourists and locals with their majestic presence.

On board a whale watching vessel, the sharp and clean ocean air fills your lungs, as the ship steams out from Alta. Around mid-winter, migrating herring attract humpbacks, orcas, and fin whales off the coast of Northern Norway. For the whales, the large volumes of these small fish provide a massive feast. The last few years, this phenomenon has mainly occurred in the Lyngenfjord / Alta area.

If you are in luck, a whale safari is an excellent way of getting a close look at a tail fluke and learning more about these fascinating animals in their natural habitat.

The winter whale watching season in Alta usually runs from late October to the end of February. But this isn’t just a ride out to see whales—it’s a breathtaking journey through the stunning Arctic fjords, where the raw beauty of the landscape adds another layer of magic to the experience.

The main attraction – sperm whales

As the journey continues, the anticipation builds. The crew suddenly picks up the faint clicks of a distant sperm whale on their sonar… It’s time to get your camera ready! These deep-diving giants, known for their distinctive square heads and impressive size, are the true stars of the Arctic waters. Sperm whales are a rare and remarkable sight, and encountering one is a moment that stays with you long after the trip ends. As the whale emerges from the deep, you’ll have a front-row seat to one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles.
