Where is ONGA Boutique Lodge located?
ONGA Boutique Lodge is located in a peaceful forest setting in Mathisdalen, just a 40-minute drive from Alta Airport in Northern Norway. The remote location is free from light and noise pollution, making it perfect for experiencing the Northern Lights and connecting with nature.
How do I get to ONGA Boutique Lodge?
You can reach ONGA Boutique Lodge by car or book a transfer with us. Please note that the final stretch is a forest road, so we recommend driving slowly and carefully. If you’re driving yourself, simply enter Mathisdalen 481 into your GPS to receive accurate directions. For added comfort, our winter packages include transfers to and from Alta Airport or Alta city center on arrival and departure days.
When is the best time to visit for the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights season at ONGA runs from September to April, read more in this article. Our location offers dark skies and ideal viewing conditions right outside your room – or from one of our Aurora Domes.
Is it possible to see the Northern Lights from the lodge?
Yes, ONGA Boutique Lodge is an ideal location to watch the Northern Lights. Nestled in a remote forest setting, far from public roads and light pollution, and located near the site of the very first Northern Lights observatory, our guests enjoy excellent aurora visibility right from the lodge.
All our winter packages include daily guided Aurora walks, and on particularly active nights, we’ve even been known to pause dinner service to alert guests when the auroras start dancing outside. Whether from your room, the Shared Aurora Dome, or from our outdoor jacuzzior, or on a snow-covered trail, ONGA offers a truly magical Northern Lights experience.
What are the Aurora Domes?
The Aurora Domes are transparent, igloo-style structures nestled in the forest, just 100–150 meters from the lodge rooms. Each dome is equipped with a pellet heater, ensuring a warm and cozy atmosphere even on the coldest nights.
Our Shared Aurora Dome is always included in winter packages and features comfortable chairs for social gatherings or just quiet moments.
We also offer four Private Aurora Domes, each furnished with a double bed and a small seating area. These are included when you book an Aurora SPA Queen Room and can be reserved as an optional add-on with other room categories.
Please note: the Aurora Domes do not have running water or toilets. Guests are encouraged to use the facilities in their lodge rooms for comfort and convenience.
Can I book a special celebration or private event at ONGA?

What kind of food is served at ONGA Boutique Lodge?
At ONGA Boutique Lodge, we offer a set menu that highlights fresh, local ingredients from Northern Norway, prepared daily by our renowned in-house chef.
- Breakfast is served as a buffet, featuring homemade bread, local cheeses, eggs, and Arctic specialties.
- Lunch and dinner follow a set menu format and are inspired by regional flavors, using carefully selected ingredients that reflect the Arctic seasons.
Our winter packages always include full board, which covers:
- A hearty breakfast buffet
- A 2-course lunch
- A 3-course fine dining dinner
Guests also have the option to upgrade to a 5-course dinner for an additional fee.
From time to time, we host social dining experiences, where guests share a long table and stories over a curated menu – a warm and memorable way to connect.
For private lodge buyouts, we are happy to customize the food experience, including special requests, dietary needs, or celebratory menus.
What if I have food allergies or dietary restrictions?
We take all food allergies and dietary needs seriously and are happy to accommodate them. To ensure the best possible experience, please let us know about any allergies at the time of booking, so our chef can plan and prepare accordingly.

Are there any dangerous animals in the area?
No – there are no dangerous animals in the area around ONGA Boutique Lodge. The wildlife you may encounter while exploring includes for example reindeer, Arctic foxes, weasles, squirrels, and hares, all of which are completely harmless and shy by nature.
Larger animals, such as moose, do live in the region but tend to avoid humans. You might be lucky enough to spot one from a safe distance, especially during quiet moments in nature.
In general, Northern Norway is a very safe place to enjoy the outdoors, and wildlife encounters here are peaceful and rare.
What should I pack for my stay in Northern Norway?
What to pack depends on the season and the experiences you plan to enjoy. Weather in Northern Norway can vary, so we always recommend dressing in layers and being prepared for changing conditions.
🧊 Winter and spring (November – April):
To stay warm and comfortable, we recommend bringing:
- Wool or thermal long underwear (top and bottom)
- A wool or fleece sweater/mid-layer
- Insulated winter jacket and trousers
- Wool socks and waterproof winter boots
- Winter gloves, warm hat, and scarf or neck warmer
- Optional: headlamp for darker periods
- Swimwear – don’t forget it for the sauna and outdoor jacuzzi!

🌤️ Summer and autumn (June – October):
You’ll still want to pack for layering and cooler evenings:
- Lightweight long underwear
- Wind- and waterproof outer layers
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- Light gloves and hat (especially for forest or mountain walks)
- Swimwear – for relaxing in the jacuzzi and sauna!

What temperatures should I expect?
Northern Norway experiences a wide range of temperatures depending on the season.
- ❄️ In winter (November–March), temperatures typically range from -5°C to -25°C (23°F to -13°F), but can occasionally drop to -30°C (-22°F) on the coldest days.
- 🌤️ In summer (June–August), average daytime temperatures are around 12°C to 18°C (54°F to 64°F), but on warm days it can rise to 30°C (86°F).
- 🍂 In autumn (September–October), temperatures gradually drop from around 9°C (48°F) in September to just above freezing at 1°C (34°F) in October, with cooler nights and increasing chances of rain.
Because the weather in the Arctic can shift quickly, we strongly recommend checking the local forecast before you travel and packing clothing suitable for layering.

Is it possible to book external activities outside ONGA Boutique Lodge?
Yes, it is possible to book external activities that take place outside of ONGA. We’ll be happy to assist with the arrangements, and the price will be adjusted to include transfers to and from the lodge.
However, we encourage our guests to spend most of their time at the lodge to fully embrace the slow travel experience. Staying at ONGA allows you to truly unwind, enjoy the peaceful forest surroundings, and take advantage of our unique on-site offerings like the Aurora Domes, sauna, jacuzzi, and guided nature experiences.

Are you open during Christmas and New Year?
Yes, ONGA Boutique Lodge is open during the Christmas and New Year holidays. However, availability during this period is limited and must be checked via email request only.
We offer exclusive festive lodge buyouts for Christmas or New Year celebrations. It’s a magical time to experience the Arctic forest, northern lights, and cozy luxury in complete privacy.
