Sami Reindeer Tour
Your one-day adventure begins at the picturesque Onga Lodge, nestled amidst the snow-covered landscapes of Mathisdalen. From here, we embark on a two-hour drive to Lahpoluoppal, a charming Sami village.
Upon arrival, we are warmly greeted by the owner of the reindeer herd. After suiting up, we set off on an exhilarating 10 km snowmobile ride, journeying from the village to the area where the family tend to their herd.
The ride across the frozen terrain is a breathtaking experience as the landscape unfolds into the vast, untouched wilderness of the vidde – a high plateau that stretches endlessly in every direction, its rolling contours blanketed in snow.
As we arrive, the reindeer herd comes into view – a mesmerizing sight as hundreds of reindeer move gracefully across the snow. The herd owner guides us closer, and soon we find ourselves surrounded by these magnificent creatures. Being in the midst of the herd is a magical experience, offering a deep connection with nature and a glimpse into the rich traditions of the Sami people. Don’t forget your camera!
After spending time with the reindeer, we continue to the herder’s cottage, a simple hut where the family stays during the winter months as they care for their herd.
Here, we enjoy a warm, traditional reindeer lunch while the crew share their insights into life as Sami reindeer herders, discussing their traditions, values, and culture.
As the day draws to a close, we hop back onto the snowmobiles and return to Lahpoluoppal, completing the journey back to Onga Lodge.
