Sami Reindeer Tour

Your one-day tour begins in the picturesque Onga Lodge nestled amidst the snow-covered landscapes of Mathisdalen. We drive to Lahpoluoppal, a very small Sami village. The ride takes about two hours.

We are warmly welcomed by Anders who is the owner of the reindeer herd. We get dressed for a 10 km snowmobile ride from the village into the area where Anders and the family keep their herd.

The ride across the frozen terrain is spectacular in itself as the landscape opens up into the vast, pristine wilderness of the vidde, a high plateau that stretches endlessly in every direction, its undulating contours covered in snow.

Arriving, you see the reindeer herd in the distance, a mesmerizing sight as hundreds of them move gracefully across the snow. Anders leads us closer until we are surrounded by these magnificent creatures. Being in the midst of the herd is a magical experience, a moment of connection with nature and a deep dive into the traditions of the Sami people. Bring your camera!

After spending time with the reindeer, we drive to the herder’s cottage, a simple hut that Anders and the family use during wintertime looking after their herd.

We have a warm traditional rein deer lunch as Anders and crew talks about how they live their life as traditional Sami reindeer herders with traditions, expectations, and culture.

As the day draws to a close, you mount the snowmobiles once more, this time riding back to Lahpoluoppal, returning to Onga.
