How to drive from Alta to the North Cape

Travelling between Alta and the North Cape is one of the most scenic drives in Northern Norway. The route takes you through wide Arctic landscapes, small coastal communities, and open tundra before reaching the dramatic cliffs overlooking the Arctic Ocean. The drive between Alta and Honningsvåg, the gateway town to the North Cape, takes around 3.5–4 hours by car, making it ideal for a relaxed self-drive journey.

Many travellers choose to combine these two iconic destinations in one trip — exploring the UNESCO rock art at Alta Museum, experiencing peaceful nature stays, and then continuing to the famous North Cape plateau.

Our North Cape & Alta Arctic Road Trip package makes it easy to experience both highlights, with curated stays, local cuisine, and optional cultural experiences along the way. The journey can start either in Alta or in Honningsvåg, giving you full flexibility to explore Northern Norway at your own pace.
