Frozen River Walk – Explore the Magic of Mathiselva (Gávvávžžejohka)
Frozen River Walk
Embark on the serene and unforgettable Frozen River Walk along Mathiselva, also known by its Sámi name, Gávvávžžejohka. This guided adventure invites you to discover the untouched beauty of the Arctic wilderness, where nature’s stories come to life.
Equipped with snowshoes or skishoes and poles, you’ll traverse the snowy landscape of this historic river valley, surrounded by ancient pine forests and birch groves. The walk, lasting up to three hours and tailored to your preferences, allows you to immerse yourself in the ever-changing light of the Arctic. During the polar night, witness the enchanting blue light and rapid transitions of the sky, a phenomenon unique to this region.
As you explore, you’ll encounter fascinating features like animal tracks and intricate ice formations, all while learning about the natural history and cultural significance of the area. Mathiselva begins deep within the fjell landscapes and flows through a pristine forested U-shaped valley before reaching Kåfjord near Alta. The valley is home to over a hundred bird species, some of which are rare or endangered.
To enhance your experience, we’ll make a stop along the riverbank, where you can enjoy warm drinks and snacks. Headlights and warm suits are provided if needed, ensuring comfort and safety throughout the adventure.
Whether you’re drawn by the romance of the Sámi traditions or the pristine wilderness, the Frozen River Walk offers a deeper connection to the Arctic and its timeless beauty.
